In September, Weil Gotshal & Manges denied any ongoing law firm merger talks. On October 19, the firm’s leadership told partners it was exploring a merger, and four days later halted the discussions.
According to The American Lawyer, at least 40 partners left Weil during the year, including several practice heads. The departures occurred while the firm reported billing over $2 billion in 2025. Clients of the departing partners faced an immediate choice: follow their lawyer to a new firm or remain with Weil without that attorney.
Similar Moves in the Colombian Market
In July 2025, Pérez-Llorca and Gómez-Pinzón completed what they called the first full integration between an Ibero-American firm and a leading Colombian practice. The same year, Godoy merged its Córdoba and Hoyos branches into a single structure.
Back in 2023, a group of 28 lawyers from Cuberos Cortés Gutiérrez Abogados, including seven partners, transferred to Holland & Knight. Each of these moves altered the service conditions for existing clients without their direct involvement.

Client Impact and Contract Options
The loss of a familiar partner can change the team composition, introduce new priorities, and bring in lawyers who were not part of the original discussions. The merged firm may now represent an adversary or a direct competitor, creating a conflict that did not exist before.
Legal departments can mitigate surprise by adding clauses that name the responsible partner and give the client the right to decide whether work continues with that individual or with the firm after the departure. Such language can also require the firm to notify the client within a set period of any integration, change of control, or exit of the lead team.
After a merger, contracts may demand a fresh conflict-of-interest review and require the results to be communicated before further work proceeds. They can also allow termination without penalty, mandate the handover of files in usable formats, and set a transition period with the departing lawyer.
Maintaining the agreed-upon fee schedule until the matter closes or the current phase ends is another protective measure that can be built into the agreement.
