A Healthy diet includes a variety of plant-based and animal-based foods that provide nutrients to the body. Nutrients help build and strengthen bones, muscles, and tendons and also regulate body processes (i.e., blood pressure). Macronutrients are consumed in relatively large quantities and include proteins, carbohydrates, and fats and fatty acids. Micronutrients – vitamins and minerals – are consumed in relatively smaller quantities, but are essential to body processes. The food guide pyramid is a pyramid-shaped guide of healthy foods divided into sections. Each section shows the recommended intake for each food group (i.e., protein, fat, carbohydrates and sugars).

5 million children died before reaching their fifth birthday in 2020 alone, down from 5.9 million in 2015. Between January 2020 and May 2021, the pandemic may have claimed the lives of 115,500 health and care workers worldwide. As of May 2022, more than 80 per cent of people had received at least one dose of a vaccine in high-income countries but the proportion is only about 17 per cent in low-income countries. In 2020 and 2021, 14.9 million people were estimated to have died due to COVID-19 and its impact on health systems and society. As a result, immunization coverage dropped for the first time in 10 years, and deaths from TB and malaria increased.
Making healthy food choices can lower one’s risk of heart disease and the risk of developing some types of cancer, and can help one maintain their weight within a healthy range. Just as there was a shift from viewing disease as a state to thinking of it as a process, the same shift happened in definitions of health. Again, the WHO played a leading role when it fostered the development of the health promotion movement in the 1980s. This brought in a new conception of health, not as a state, but in dynamic terms of resiliency, in other words, as “a resource for living”. Mental, intellectual, emotional and social health referred to a person’s ability to handle stress, to acquire skills, to maintain relationships, all of which form resources for resiliency and independent living. This opens up many possibilities for health to be taught, strengthened and learned.
